Brickin' it! AKA: The Great Wall of Barcombe Fundraiser This wonderful fundraising project raised an incredible £16,706 for the New Barcombe Village Hall and immortalised a large number of villagers to boot. Barcombe's Beating of the Bounds A great success, fun was had by all and some money was even raised for the New Village Hall! Progress Report and Further Funding Appeal Following completion of preliminary access works, the construction work on the new hall started on the 14th June and is planned to be completed in December. Despite this funding progress however, there are at present insufficient monies in hand or guarantees to meet the whole cost of the hall. In order not to delay matters any further therefore, some £75,000 of works have had to be deferred to a second phase until funds are available to pay for them. This means that, while the new main hall, kitchen, toilet blocks and the club room to rehouse the Barcombe Club from its present accommodation above the existing hall will be occupiable, finishing works such as plastering and decoration, some floor finishes and internal walls, certain electrical and other services and works to enable the new stage to be used for performances have, at present, had to be deferred. This will inevitably mean that, until these works can be done, the new building will present, in several respects, an unfinished look that will make it visually less attractive than we would all wish and leave some parts unable to be fully used in the manner intended. These phase two works can still be reincorporated into the original timetable if funds to pay for them can be secured in time. Since the works started further receipts have made it possible to order additional items for which the deadline date was June/July but this still leaves approximately £60,000 of works cost still unfunded Work is currently in hand to obtain further grants to cover part of this cost but these applications, even if successful, will meet only a part of what is required and there will still remain non-building requirements such as cooker and washing up machines for the kitchen and whatever other furnishing items are considered desirable and for which the old hall contents may not be considered suitable. We have three key dates to raise funds by if we decide to undertake both phase 1 and 2 in the same contract. These are:
The purpose of this progress report is therefore to let everyone know where we have got to but also to ask anyone who may be minded to make a financial contribution, or even to top up one already made, to do whatever they can before the middle of August. If we can not see our way to authorise the remaining finishing works by that date their eventual completion later on is likely to become more expensive and the scope for full use of the new hall will be inevitably delayed. A brief summary of works so far completed and programmed works to the end of July. We are delighted to announce that we are building the New Village Hall We are delighted to announce that we are building the New Village Hall. The construction time for Phase 1 is 5 months. Thanks to your support and the Parish council, all the money is in place to start construction on Phase 1. The Parish council have agreed to contribute up to £15,000 if required. This acts like a buffer to us. If we reach our final figure to build the hall, we won’t need to use this. Phase 1 Phase2 You will soon be able to see diggers on Cobbs Mead. We would like to welcome you to join us at a press release at Cobbs Mead (we will inform you in next month’s edition) to celebrate yours and our achievement to date. We would prefer to see all the project completed and are working hard to find grants. Some grants will only become active whilst we are building. We are currently looking at some innovative fundraisers. Plus support from you. We will keep you updated once we have more information to share with you. This is a perfect opportunity for those of you who would like to donate but were not too sure if this really was going to happen. Either donate via this web site or, If you still have your envelopes sent out in last month’s Barcombe News with the *gift aid form (*gift aid means we can claim 28p extra on each £1 donation) you can return your donation to any of the locations listed below. We want you to know we appreciate your generosity. The future of the New Village Hall is in your hands - Janet Hughes (Chair) We need to ensure the future of this project
Week 4: £????.?? There has been a great response from you and we thank you for your support. Plus a big thank you to James Hollingsworth, Nigel Greenwood and Hedley Cornwell for speedily getting the forms into last months Barcombe News for me. If you have not sent your envelope back yet there is still time! Cheques payable to : Barcombe Village Hall. This community project is so close to starting. I’m sure there are a few who cannot believe this is actually happening and therefore are unsure of donating at this stage, but would like to help. You can let us know in the form of a pledge. Send back your envelope from last month’s barcombe news with how much you would like to “pledge donate” or for further information turn to the relevant page in this barcombe news regarding how to donate. To enhance facilities in this village means ongoing community vibrancy and that’s what makes a place attractive to live in. Barcombe is a unique and “off the beaten track” village in this modern world that we live in. We need a new hall to accommodate our growing village and to give the community a working building to be proud of and to use, plus a new extended path to the new hall will aid safe access. There are so many reasons to support it: A place to work in... meet in… hold receptions in… cater in… celebrate in…
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- General Update - Janet Hughes (Chair) As Dilys has written below, the open day was completely packed. It was a great opportunity for us to fulfil the “Who, What, Why, When and Where” criteria and for you to have your say regarding the old and the new hall. We appreciated the suggestions from those of you who took the time to fill in the comments book and they will be fed back at the next meeting. If you would still like to suggest, comment or donate you do this via this web site. We have analysed all the bids and tenders and have come to a unanimous decision to go with the building company, Taskers. We had to take into account the best value for the old hall and the new hall. The company will be building the new one and purchasing the old one by degrees (stage payments will be reduced pro rata). This was backed up by you at the meeting with a unanimous “for” vote. We are in a good position right now! Builders are looking for work during this quiet economic time and also want to be seen to deliver more green sustainable buildings. It is in our interest to act now whilst we have a good price. The design process is going on and will be completed up to a building control level by mid February, this is when we are ready to start and also in line with the builders’ offer. It’s now down to you! Funding update - Nigel Greenwood (Treasurer) £292 - Share of log proceeds from Knowlands Farm *82% of the money has been raised so far. We need to raise the other 18%. Our challenge is to close the gap. The committee is working on behalf of you to find grants and fundraise. You can help by donating too. We need to raise the 160k NOW! The builders’ tender offer expires on the 22nd February 2010. * This is including a grant for 50k that we should hear about very soon.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Village Hall Open Day - Dilys Scan (Main Committee Chair) The Open Morning turned into a lively social event. Far from keeping everyone away, the wintry weather brought you out in your hundreds (well one hundred at least). Many thanks to all who made the effort – the old Village Hall is not the most inviting venue on a freezing cold Saturday morning though the mulled wine did ease the pain! £25,000 from Viridor Credits! Good news! The committee is delighted to announce that we have been awarded £25,000 (net) from the Landfill Communities Fund from Viridor Credits. This is money that Viridor would otherwise pay as Landfill Tax on rubbish it disposes of at its landfill sites. We are eligible because Barcombe is within a five-mile radius of the landfill site at Beddingham (which is now closed so the money will soon dry up – we applied in the nick of time!). The grant has been earmarked to pay for the turf roof and fitting out the kitchen in the new hall. We also have an outstanding application to Biffa, who run the Burgess Hill landfill site. We hope to hear about that grant early in the New Year. Meanwhile, the bids for the purchase of the old hall and the tenders for building the new hall will be opened early in November. From the BNVH chair Janet Hughes
