Barcombe has been selected by the Department of Energy and Climate Change to undertake a feasibility study on how we could have a community heating system in the village.
Community heating is common in Europe (where large central boilers, fuelled by wood chips, are linked to each building by underground heating pipes). Recently, and stimulated by the Government’s Renewable Heat incentive (Renewable Heat Incentive RHI), it is starting to be taken seriously in the UK as a real opportunity for communities to help tackle the rise in energy prices and reduce carbon.  

A high percentage of Barcombe households use oil for heating. The savings of linking into a district heating system look to be attractive. The systems that we will investigate use wood chip (Biomass) as the fuel which is currently available at half the cost of heating oil..
